Calumet Chapter
Calumet Chapter, the first independent Chapter of the Indiana Society of Professional
Engineers, was established in 1938, one year after the June 4, 1937 incorporation
of the Indiana Society of Professional Engineers. Initially, the Calumet Chapter included
membership from Lake, Porter, LaPorte, Starke, Pulaski, Jasper and Newton Counties.
In 1961, the Professional Engineers in Porter, LaPorte, Starke and Pulaski Counties
formed the Dunes Chapter of the ISPE. In 1986, faced with declining membership,
the Dunes Chapter rejoined the Calumet Chapter. The Calumet Chapter Auxiliary
was an active part of the Chapter from 1955 through 1987. Calumet has sent seven
members to the State Presidency, sponsored five ISPE Engineer of the Year honorees,
eight ISPE Young Engineer of the Year honorees and won the Award for Chapter
Excellence twelve times from ISPE and once from NSPE. The Calumet Chapter
Young Engineer of the Year Award is named for John M. Swanton, P.E.
